David "Salt" Walther started in 64 Indy car races and four NASCAR races between 1970 and 1981. He earned his nautical nickname from hydroplane boat races where he also competed. Seriously injured in a crash at the 1973 Indianapolis 500, Walther overcame burns to his body and wounds to his hands and returned to race at Indy the next year.
