Joe Leonard won three national motorcycle racing championships from 1954 to 1957 before he moved to USAC Champ Car racing in 1964. Over the next 11 seasons, he made 98 starts and earned USAC national championships in 1971 and 1972. Leonard competed in the Indianapolis 500 nine times, finishing in third place in 1967 and 1972.
