National media coverage drew public attention to the economic collapse that destroyed many family farms starting in 1979. Nothing compared, however, to the effort that farmers undertook on their own behalf. They organized tractorcades or protest processions to spotlight the crisis. These tractorcades formed throughout the country and rallied at state capitals, or in Washington, D.C.
