Ferrari 250 GTO Race Cars at Daytona International Speedway, February 1964

01

Artifact Overview

Ferrari built 36 examples of its 250 GTO race car from 1962 to 1964, and they earned the company three consecutive International Championships for GT Manufacturers. The "250" referenced the displacement in each of the 3,000-cubic-centimeter V-12 engine's cylinders, and "GTO" stood for "Gran Turismo Omologato" -- an Italian term indicating that the cars were officially approved for Grand Touring competition.
