The 1910 International Aviation Tournament at Belmont Park, on New York's Long Island, attracted dozens of the world's best pilots with some $75,000 in prize money. The tournament included altitude contests, the Gordon Bennett speed race, and a round-trip run from Belmont Park to the Statue of Liberty. An estimated 75,000 spectators watched the start and finish of that final event.
