Pipe Tongs, 1700-1800

01

Artifact Overview

Before matches, smokers used tongs like this one to maintain and light their pipes. They tamped tobacco into their pipe bowl with one end, then turned it around and used the handles to pick up an ember while keeping a safe distance from the fire. Blacksmiths made the graceful but utilitarian tool from durable wrought iron that withstood heat.
