The Republican Party held its 1980 National Convention to select a presidential candidate in Detroit, Michigan. Former California Governor Ronald Reagan, a conservative, had locked up the nomination in May, and the only question remaining was who he would choose for his running mate. Reagan selected George W. Bush, his Republican primary opponent and a moderate, to balance the ticket. They won.
