Maija Grotell, the "Mother of American Studio Ceramics," immigrated to the United States from Finland in 1927 to pursue a career in ceramics. After teaching in New York, she became the head of the ceramics program at Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, in 1938. She is known for popularizing European wheel throwing and technical innovations with glazes.
