Campaign Button, 1940

Eleanor Roosevelt, wife of President Franklin Roosevelt, made many enemies for her stances on human rights, civil liberties, and her general political leanings when she was First Lady. Eleanor became a target during Franklin's re-election campaigns. In the 1940 presidential election, Republicans wanted Wendell Willkie; they did not want the incumbent or his wife. Americans, however, stuck with Franklin and Eleanor.
