Auto magnate Henry Ford established the experimental Edison Institute Schools in 1929. His educational philosophy was "learn to do by doing." Students' lessons incorporated traditional books as well as objects and hands-on experiences in Ford's museum and historical village, shown here in 1930. Ford would relent to persistent demands to open the Edison Institute (now The Henry Ford) to the public in 1933.
