David Dunbar Buick established his automobile company in 1899, and it became General Motors' original brand in 1908. GM positioned Buick as a mid-priced car in its growing empire. Buick the man sold his stake in the firm and died in relative obscurity. Buick the brand survived to become the oldest active American automobile marque in the early 21st century.
