Artifact Overview

Sears, Roebuck and Company, the giant Chicago mail-order house, offered its first automobile in 1908. The two-cylinder Model H was basic, but the car's high wheels and solid rubber tires were well matched to the era's rough roads. The $395 price tag appealed to budget-minded shoppers too. Sears sold nearly 3,500 autos before leaving the business in 1912.
