Extension-Front Brougham, or Clarence, 1840-1860

01

Artifact Overview

The brougham carriage found wide use with affluent private owners and in commercial taxi services. Its compact size made for easy maneuverability, while its drop-center floor and long door provided ready passenger access. This brougham belonged to John J. Tanner, who used it to ferry people between the railroad station and hotel in Brighton, Michigan, from about 1871 to 1910.
