San Francisco's Panama-Pacific International Exposition celebrated the completion of the Panama Canal and the 400th anniversary of the discovery of the Pacific Ocean. In celebration of the fair, the United States Congress authorized the San Francisco Mint to issue a series of commemorative coins--a silver Panama-Pacific half dollar and gold coins in $1, $2.50, and $50 denominations.
