The comic book superheroes Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael, and Michelangelo) debuted in 1984. The foursome, altered by radioactive material, lived in the sewers of New York City, where they practiced martial arts, fought evil, and ate pizza. By 1988, the franchise had a popular Saturday morning animated series. Burger King offered Kid's Meal toys like this soon after.
