Artifact Overview
George Buntin designed this railroad passenger car seat, used on the Michigan Central Railroad around 1860. It features a reversible back that pivots above the armrests from one side to the other, allowing passengers to face forward regardless of the car's direction of travel. Its stiff springs, sturdy upholstery, and bare armrests were chosen more for durability than passenger comfort.
