Postcards allowed people to share snapshots of their lives--for less than it cost to mail a letter. When the United States Postal Service approved postcards with divided backs in 1907, senders could include a written message beside the recipient's address. Americans were hooked. They mailed hundreds of millions of postcards every year before the start of World War I.
