Lincoln Highway Marker, circa 1925
01
Artifact Overview
This glass, electric streetlight globe from Wooster, Ohio, identified the Lincoln Highway, America's first cross-country, named highway. Dedicated in 1913, it ran for more than 3,000 miles from New York City to San Francisco, passing through 13 states on its original routing. By 1925, the federal government began numbering the patchwork of named highways, and the Lincoln Highway passed into memory.
