Ford Highland Park Plant under Construction, circa 1909

01

Artifact Overview

When demand for Ford's automobiles exceeded capacity at its Piquette Avenue plant, construction began on a new and much larger factory in nearby Highland Park. Industrial architect Albert Kahn designed the facility using steel and reinforced concrete. It featured airy windows and skylights that led some to call Ford's Highland Park plant the "Crystal Palace" after it opened in 1910.
