The firefighter became -- and remains -- a heroic symbol of bravery and devotion to duty. Firefighters were celebrated in books, on stage, and in song. The "New York Fireman's March" was written by Mark M. Doob in 1894. Hugh Bonner, the sixth New York City Fire Commissioner, is pictured on the cover of the sheet music.
