Abraham Lincoln Visiting Military Officers at Antietam in 1862

President Abraham Lincoln visits General George B. McClellan and his military officers at Antietam, Maryland. The men are standing outside an encampment tent. Alexander Gardner made the original photograph on October 3, 1862. At the time, this was the main eastern theater of the American Civil War. President Lincoln often conferred with his commanders in the field. Lincoln, at 6-foot 4-inches and wearing his distinctive top hat, towers over McClellan and his officers. This copy print was made September 22, 1926 by Ford Motor Company Photographic Department in Dearborn, Michigan. It probably was used for programs at Greenfield Village in the 1930s.
