Artifact Overview
In February 1940, Mickey Rooney and MGM executives were guests of Henry Ford at the Edison Institute. The group was preparing for the premier of the MGM production Young Tom Edison. Rooney, the film's star, and studio executives would take a train supplied by Henry Ford to Port Huron, Michigan. Port Huron was the boyhood home of Thomas Edison and site of the premier.

This miniature carriage was custom built for entertainer Charles Stratton, better known by his stage name Tom Thumb. Discovered by P.T. Barnum, the diminutive Thumb (3 feet, 4 inches tall when fully grown) sang and danced to the delight of 19th-century audiences. Thumb advertised his show by riding in this carriage, behind a team of ponies, through cities where he performed.
