Charles Dickens' American publisher offered this print for sale to the public as the famous English author arrived for his second visit to the United States. It was a reading tour, with Dickens reading aloud from his literary works. Dickens had a ready audience for this tour--from December 1867 to April 1868, he performed 76 readings, earning for himself the vast sum of £19,000.
