Henry Ford's vision for the Ford Motor Company River Rouge Complex was self-sufficiency. A centrally located fire department embodied this ideal. Ford employed nearly 100 men on this all-hours fire protection force. Rouge firemen inspected and maintained fire preventive devices throughout the complex, responded to active fires with Ford chemical and ladder trucks, and--perhaps surprisingly--operated the plant laundry facility.
