Eddie Rickenbacker was the most successful American fighter pilot of World War I. His 26 victories set an Army record, and he was awarded the Medal of Honor. Rickenbacker -- who had been a racing driver before the war -- purchased Indianapolis Motor Speedway in 1927, and he became general manager of Eastern Air Lines in 1935.
