Henry Ford (third from right) and his consultant metallurgist J. Kent Smith (third from left) pose with a group at United Steel Company's plant in 1906. Ford contracted the company to produce vanadium steel -- an alloy both lighter and stronger than standard carbon steel. Ford used vanadium steel in his Model K, N, and T automobiles.
