Artifact Overview
In 1902, Martha Berry established a school near Rome, Georgia, to educate local underprivileged boys. Seven years later, she opened a school for girls. These early schools became models for other vocational, agricultural and mechanical schools that served poor rural areas. Berry's work impressed many wealthy Americans, including Henry and Clara Ford who became life-long benefactors.
