Handheld video game consoles became popular after the very successful 1989 introduction of the Nintendo Game Boy. The Game Boy Color, introduced in 1998, has a color screen and features the same 8-bit processor as its predecessor; it is "backward compatible" with all the games produced for the original Game Boy.
