Artifact Overview
Tintypes, the inexpensive "instant photographs" of the 19th century, gave more people than ever before the chance to have a real likeness of relatives, friends, and themselves. Photograph albums--introduced in the very early 1860s--provided a way to organize, preserve, and conveniently view these images. This album holds "gem" photographs--the smallest tintype, 3/4 to 1 inch in size.
