Frank E. Kirby was among the most influential marine architects of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Kirby spent much of his career on the Great Lakes, where his Detroit Dry Dock Company built everything from opulent passenger steamers to powerful ice-breaking railroad car ferries. Kirby influenced Henry Ford, who apprenticed at Detroit Dry Dock as a teenager.
