Portrait of Private John Litogot, 24th Michigan Volunteer Infantry, Company K, August 1862

01

Artifact Overview

John Litogot posed for this photograph shortly after he enlisted in the 24th Michigan Volunteer Infantry in July 1862 during the Civil War. Litogot's first battle was also his last -- he was killed during the Battle of Fredericksburg that December. Litogot was Henry Ford's mother's brother -- the orphaned Litogots were adopted by different families as children. Ford never knew his uncle John, who died before Ford was born in July 1863.
