Henry Ford and conservationist George Washington Carver had been close friends beginning in the late 1930s. When Carver died in January 1943, Carver's assistant Austin Curtis, Jr. sent a telegram from Tuskegee, Alabama, where Carver had worked and taught since 1896, to Henry Ford in Dearborn. Ford sent flowers to the funeral and released a statement appreciating Carver's life and achievements.
