President Theodore Roosevelt began his friendship with naturalist John Burroughs in 1889 when Roosevelt revealed to Burroughs that he was a fan of the naturalist's writing. Sharing a bond over nature, the two went on several trips together including a highly publicized trip to Yellowstone. Roosevelt also visited Burroughs at his Slabsides cabin in New York, where this photograph was taken.
