Glenn Curtiss supplemented his manufacturing income with a flight training school on North Island, near San Diego. The U.S. Army and Navy both supplied Curtiss with a steady stream of students as the military adopted the airplane. Curtiss encouraged the Army and Navy to establish their own facilities on the island. Naval Air Station North Island was founded in 1917.
