01

Artifact Overview

In 1925, Mary Breckinridge established the Frontier Nursing Service to bring qualified nurse-midwives and modern, life-saving healthcare to many inaccessible areas of eastern Kentucky. To support these efforts, Breckinridge cultivated wealthy donors, such as Edsel Ford. Breckinridge sent this appeal to Edsel in 1940. Edsel, before deciding how much to give, listed his previous contributions, which included a used automobile.
