The Detroit News sponsored its first annual Soap Box Derby competition in 1935. Winners advanced to the national contest in Akron, Ohio. Detroit's race took place in Rouge Park until 1956, when it moved to purpose-built Derby Hill. The Detroit News ended its sponsorship after 1971. The Detroit derby itself ended in the 1990s.
