Proud Pumpkin, 1953

Artifact Overview

Nora S. Unwin (1907-1982) wrote and illustrated Proud Pumpkin in 1953. It tells the story of a pumpkin with a high opinion of itself. Not content to be used for pies, the proud pumpkin becomes a jack-o'-lantern for Halloween. Afterward--discarded, decaying, and alone--the pumpkin finds hope only when a chipmunk makes his collapsed shell its home for the winter.
