Morris Markin formed Checker Motors Corporation in 1922. The company manufactured taxicabs at its plant in Kalamazoo, Michigan, until 1982. Checker introduced its Model A in 1939. It was the company's first new model in three years, and the Model A's retractable rear roof was heralded as a major innovation for the industry. The cab also included a separate sunroof.
