Michelin Daira Tire Pressure Gauge, circa 1930

01

Artifact Overview

Gauges like this one measured air pressure inside a motor vehicle's tires. Pushing the socket onto the tire's valve stem released a burst of air that moved the needle on the gauge, indicating the tire's pressure in pounds per square inch. Maintaining correct tire pressure improves vehicle safety, fuel efficiency, and tire service life.
