"Cathedral" Burial Quilt, Made by Zak Foster, 2019

The early 21st century has seen growing interest in sustainable and environmentally friendly burial practices. Zak Foster, a textile artist who identifies as gay, creates burial quilts intended to be wrapped around the deceased and placed directly into the earth. Foster's quilts--made from all-natural fibers--are designed to be enjoyed in life, then protect the body and celebrate the person at life's end.
