Dirt Being Hauled Away by Wagons during Road Construction, circa 1925

01

Artifact Overview

Even in the automotive age, some road construction equipment was horse-drawn or steam-powered. The road grader pictured here is driven by a steam traction engine. As it flattens the surface for a new road, workers transfer loose earth into mule-drawn wagons and haul it offsite.
