Wright Brothers at the International Aviation Tournament, Belmont Park, Long Island, New York, October 1910

01

Artifact Overview

Brothers Orville (left) and Wilbur Wright achieved the first powered, controlled, heavier-than-air flight with their Wright Flyer in 1903. Flight was the great scientific challenge of the day, and some of the brightest minds -- and deepest pockets -- struggled to meet it. Through careful research, thoughtful experimentation, and endless encouragement from their father and sister, these Ohio bicycle shop owners succeeded.
