Ford Motor Company opened a stamping plant in Wayne, Michigan, 12 miles west of its Dearborn headquarters, in 1952. Five years later, an assembly plant was added to the site. Employees at the assembly plant initially produced Mercury station wagons but, for much of the factory's life, Ford trucks were its primary products.
