When Henry Ford purchased the Detroit, Toledo & Ironton Railroad in 1920, the line was in rough shape. He spent $15 million on improvements. Ford had DT&I's locomotives rebuilt in a shop at the Rouge factory. Many parts were plated with highly polished nickel. The gleaming surfaces boosted morale and encouraged workers to keep the engines in top condition.
