World's fairs, traditionally focused on futuristic themes, came down to earth with Expo '74--the International Exposition on the Environment. In line with the theme "Preserve the Environment," host city Spokane, Washington, reclaimed 100 acres of commercial and industrial land along its riverfront to house the fairgrounds. The fair attracted more than five million visitors from May to November 1974.
