- "Historic Summit Inn Resort," 2010 - Between 1916 and 1924, industrialists Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, and Harvey Firestone, and naturalist John Burroughs, took several camping trips together. Today, travelers can retrace the steps of these self-named "Vagabonds," including staying at the Summit Inn, where the campers dined and stopped for the night in both 1918 (due to needed car repairs) and 1921 (due to heavy rains).

The event tested a car's road performance and dependability during the 11-day, 1550-mile tour. Rules required teams to travel from one control point to another within specified times and penalized teams for vehicle repairs. Infractions diminished the automobile's reliability and could cost the team the race.
