Get a recap of the 12th annual World Tournament of Historic Baseball, which featured 16 teams from Michigan, Indiana, New York and Ohio. Among the clubs were Greenfield Village’s home teams — the Lah-De-Dah’s and the Nationals.
- "American Sports, Base Ball, Striker & Catcher" Plate, circa 1850 - The American sport of baseball rapidly gained popularity--especially after the Civil War--and many towns supported local teams by the 1880s. Some English manufacturers exported decorative goods to capitalize on American consumers' love for the game. This plate shows a striker (batter) and catcher playing "base ball," as it was often spelled into the 1890s.

Some English manufacturers exported decorative goods to capitalize on American consumers' love for the game. This plate shows a striker (batter) and catcher playing "base ball," as it was often spelled into the 1890s.
- "The Base Ball Player's Book of Reference," by Henry Chadwick, 1867 - Henry Chadwick was a sports journalist and leading promoter of early baseball. He regularly wrote about baseball and helped develop standard rules for the game. Chadwick's 1867 reference helped teach the game to interested audiences and set rules for teams to follow. The twenty-four clubs who competed in the 1867 World's Tournament of Base Ball, held in Detroit, used it as the official rulebook.

- Circus Poster, Barnum & Bailey Circus Presents Mooney's "Giants," The Famous Elephant Base-Ball Team, 1913 - In the late nineteenth century, printers developed a lithograph method that produced brightly colored posters. In advance of a circus coming to town, general agents glued these eye-catching generic posters to building walls, fences, and in window displays. To announce when and where the performances would happen, local printers sometimes provided letterpress paper date strips to paste onto the posters' lower margin.
