- RCA Theremin, Model AR-1264, 1929-1935 - The theremin was the world's first electronic instrument. It was invented in 1920 by Leon Theremin and manufactured by RCA beginning in 1929. The theremin is played by moving one's right hand near the metal rod to control the pitch, and gesturing with the left hand near the ring to control the volume. It is the only instrument played without ever being touched.
