- Portrait of Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient Milton F. Russell, circa 1900 - Milton Russell proudly wears his Medal of Honor -- awarded for valor shown during the Civil War Battle of Stones River -- in this late-1890s portrait. Near Murfreesboro, Tennessee, on December 29, 1862, Captain Russell plunged into the frigid river under heavy enemy fire and led 200 Union troops in capturing a Confederate outpost on the opposite shore.

- Orville Wright Receives the Distinguished Flying Cross from Secretary of War Frank Davis, 1929 - Until his death in 1948, Orville Wright was respected as an elder statesman -- <em>the</em> elder statesman -- of aviation. He received the U.S. military's Distinguished Flying Cross in 1929. The award citation recognized "heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight." Wilbur Wright, who had died in 1912, was awarded the medal posthumously.

Until his death in 1948, Orville Wright was respected as an elder statesman -- the elder statesman -- of aviation. He received the U.S. military's Distinguished Flying Cross in 1929. The award citation recognized "heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight." Wilbur Wright, who had died in 1912, was awarded the medal posthumously.

- "Pres. Poincare Bestowing France's Most Prized Decoration the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honor...," 1918 - Andrew Purnell Jr. (1898-1975) was born in Selma, Alabama. He joined the all-Black 303rd Stevedore Regiment (with later unit designations) in December 1917. Private Purnell was stationed in Bordeaux, France. He returned to the U.S. in 1919, married, and worked as a railroad freight handler. Like many service members, Purnell kept cards, letters, photographs, and souvenirs from his time in the military.
