01
Artifact Overview
Henry Ford purchased the struggling Detroit, Toledo & Ironton Railroad in 1920 and put $15 million into rebuilding the line. DT&I carried coal from Ford-owned mines in Kentucky to Ford's Rouge factory. While he made DT&I profitable, Ford grew tired of the extensive government regulations particular to the railroad industry. He sold the line to Pennsylvania Railroad interests in 1929.
